This weekend was one of those weekends that defines what a perfect fall weekend is supposed to be.

crunchy leaves everywhere
smores
no agenda
pumpkin-lined front porches
sinful desserts
conversations by campfire
warm apple cider
snuggling under blankets
bacon wrapped jalapenos
the smell of woodsmoke
belly laughs
baking. making. creating.

I have been longing to say that word for so long... Home.
I have felt without a home for about a year. Basically since we moved away from Austin. Our past house in Fort Worth was not bad. It just never felt like home. That is a weird sensation to explain to someone.
A house is where you store your stuff. A home is where you envision putting your Halloween pumpkins and Christmas tree every year. A house is where you sleep at night. A home is where you snuggle up on the couch under a blanket while reading a good book. A house is where you occasionally eat your meals. A home is where you enjoy long evenings with family and friends sitting around the table with your glass of wine and homemade meal.
The bottom line is that a home is where you look forward to returning to at the end of every day. A house is where you go to, well, because the day is done and you have no where else to go.
From the minute that we stepped into this new house, it felt like home. We are slowly settling into our groove here in our new digs. Learning its charms, as well as its quirks. And slowly we are making it our own.
It is weird how a house - a structure made up of walls, floors, windows, and a roof - can provide one with such a sense of belonging. A home base in a world of meetings, errands, school, traffic, and due dates. It is the calm that greets us at the door and allows us to close out all of that noise for a bit while we recharge.
Well, whatever it is, this house has made a huge difference for us as a family. Life just seems to be more smooth and be less stressful now that we live here.
I can't really put my finger on why that is...
Maybe it is all the natural light that floods every room.
Or all of the fun places for Little B to explore in the backyard.
Or the kitchen that allows making dinner to be fun again instead of a dreaded chore.
Or the wood floors that creak when you walk on them.
Or maybe it is all of the above. I don't really know. But I also don't really care, so long as I get to keep on enjoying it.

:: Sarah Jaffe's song, Clementine, has been playing over and over in my head. This may be my life's soundtrack theme song for this month. It fits my mood.
:: Little B has decided that she no longer wants to be a Christmas Tree for Halloween. Now she wants to be Minnie Mouse. I am totally on board with this costume change. Minnie Mouse - I can make that happen. Christmas Tree - Not quite sure where to even begin with that one.
:: Getting so excited about Halloween. We have been told that the trick-or-treaters come out in full force in our new neighborhood. You do not know how happy this makes me.
:: For Halloween I plan on pulling out my old standby with my Wednesday Adams costume. An oldie but a goodie. Wednesday Adams is truly my Halloween soul mate costume.
:: I am trying to talk my husband into being the Dos Equis Most Interesting Man In The World. If anyone could pull it off, it is David. But so far I have not talked him into it. I still have time.
:: I finished Gone Girl earlier this week and my mind is still spinning. The characters are so messed up. I has been a long time since a book has swept me up like that and flat out surprised me.
:: Looking for my next book choice. Any recommendations on what to read next?
:: I am loving all the fall vegetables coming in through out CSA. We are eating like kings over here.

As I sit here typing this, I am the only one awake at the moment. A few precious quiet moments all to myself. The sun is just barely starting to come up as I sip on my tea and stare down at my new October Martha Stewart magazine that I have yet to open.
I am so content in this moment.
Life is good.
What I imagined to be a brief interlude from my normal postings turned into a much larger reprieve. Such is life I guess. While my time away was unplanned, it was the right thing to do. To focus on the living of life rather than the writing of it. The perspective of walking away for a bit often provides so much substance for the act of returning. Funny of how things work out that way.
But I am back now, finding inspiration in so many places that it hard to focus on just one thing to write about. So knowing that, this post will serve as our quick catch up call. You know, the one where you catch up with a friend that you have not spoken to in a while and give them the highlight reel of your life.
Highlight reel beginning...
:: We enjoyed our annual trip to the beach with friends. A hurricane tried to cancel our plans, but we showed stinkin' Isaac who is boss around here. While the drive to Florida was not my favorite, the beach house, great company, and the crashing of the waves quickly made it all worth it.

:: We as a family had a setback this past month that left us feeling a bit raw. Nothing that I want to go into too deeply here, but just to say that we have come through the storm and are now on the other side of it.
:: Our girl turned 3! And what better way to celebrate than to have all her cousins in town to celebrate the occasion. All 3 of my brothers were in my house all at the same time. That rarely happens. The weekend was amazing and exhausting and exhilarating all at once.
:: Just this past week, we moved into an old 1950s house that is absolutely wonderful with its natural light, quirkiness, and open space. I think I am in love! The backyard is big and green and perfect for a little girl and her dog to run wild while the momma watches through all the windows while making dinner. The best part of this house is how well it works for our family. I am not sure if it is the layout, the beauty of it, or even just the vibe... but whatever it is, it has made all the difference. And for that I am incredibly thankful for.
:: Our first cold front of the season came through this weekend. We actually had to turn the heat for a little bit last night! Today I will be pulling out my tall boots and sweaters. I love this time of year.
:: Later today we are hosting our first dinner in the new house! We are celebrating both my husband's and sister-in-law's birthdays. I am so excited to have everyone over and to kick off the first of many great evenings at our new home. Homemade chili is on the menu and the weather could not be more perfect for it.
So that is the update for now. Pictures coming soon. Just a few more boxes to unpack before I remember where I packed the camera/computer cable. I can not wait to discover all the new nooks and crannies and sunlight angles for my camera to capture.
