From my bookshelf: The Devil in the White City

Posted on 06:16 by Roger

Devil in the White City by Erik Larson
My rating: 5 out of 5 stars

I actually read Devil in the White City a few years back.  But all these books being made into movies has made me take a mentally journey back to my favorite stories.  And Devil in the White City is one of those favorites that is being made into a movie that is due out in 2012.

If you are not familiar with Erik Larson and his writing, then there are a few things you should know because it will make his books that much more extraordinary.  He takes real-world happenings in history, and together with a lot of research, weaves them into a fictional type of story-telling that makes you feel like you were actually there.  His books are not stuffy research books.  No way.  They are thrillers in that you want to know HOW stuff happened... because you already know through history WHAT actually happened.  Devil in the White City is the perfect example of this.

Imagine Chicago circa 1893.  Larson tells the true tale of two men - the architect behind the legendary 1893 World's Fair, striving to secure America’s place in the world; and the serial killer who used the World Fair to lure his victims, mostly single young women, to their death. This book is history and storytelling at its finest.  It so good!
