Looking for a good quick read, then I have a great book recommendation for you.
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows is a fictional tale set in the British Channel Islands and London, post WWII. It tells the story of the an author named Juliet Ashton and her friendship with a group of people on Guernsey, one of the Channel Islands, which develops almost by accident after she receives a letter from one of them about a copy of a book he loves that she used to own - her name is written on the inside cover.
The title comes from the name of the a book club group invented on the spot by the Guernsey farmers and fishermen there when they were caught drunk after curfew, by their Nazi occupiers during the World War II. But what started as a quick-thinking cover story became a real book club where we learn about these resident's triumphs, heartbreaks, and survival during the war.
There are times when this book makes you want to laugh, cry, and smile. It's a beautiful story with wonderful characters.
Has anyone else read it? If so, leave me a comment and tell me what you thought about it.
