I read Shanghai Girls by Lisa See for my book club. The thing I love the most about my book club is that it introduces me to books that I would otherwise not pick off the shelf. This book is the perfect example.
Pearl and May, (generational name Long – which means Dragon), are the novel’s protagonists. Pearl, the older sister is the narrator. She is quite lovely,
very tall and willowy with rosy cheeks, but not a classic Chinese beauty. May, with her porcelain complexion and fine features, is thought to be perfection itself. Living in 1937 Shanghai, both of the girls are deemed as "beautiful girls". But when the Japanese invade China, life as they know it changes dramatically.
These "beautiful girls" exchange their sophisticated life for one of survival, ultimately landing in Los Angeles. This historical fiction is entertaining, interesting, and heartwarming. However at time, I felt that it was a bit contrived. Almost like author thought "what other drama can we throw into these 2 girls lives". But overall, I enjoyed it and would recommend it.
